One such crucial prop is the wacky theme song that builds the tempo till the ball hits the wicket or gets whacked by the bat.

A lot of thought, passion and commitment has gone into the making of each of the theme songs. It’s not only written to inspire the players but it comes with an underlying message.

Metrolife interacted with a few teams and asked them about the making of the songs. Each song is a smooth blend of Western and desi beats. It isn’t played in full but only in bits and pieces so that the listener yearns to hear the whole song. The songs are a call for battle, to be won at any cost.

The teams’ respective theme songs are played every time the player hits a six, four or there’s an air of victory. The song is also played to pep up the team when it is losing as well.

Every song has a winning streak attached to it. The theme song of the Delhi Daredevils captures the essence of Delhi. The video shows how the entire City comes together to support the team. The tagline of the team goes thus: Khelo front foot pe meaning ‘play on the front foot’.

“The video shows people on the streets, playground... cheering for the team. The idea is to mobilise the old, young and expand the fan base or whoever is willing to play on the front foot,” said an official with Delhi Daredevils.

The theme song of the Chennai Super Kings was written last year. The video doesn’t really mention any player’s name but has kids playing gully cricket and Dhoni comes on rather frequently with a poster of actor Rajnikanth in the background.

“The music has a local flavour to it. The video features different parts of the City. We have made a few modifications to the video and the tune is kept simple so that it’s easy to grasp and sing along,” said Chocka, creative director of Open Advertising.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore theme song has different teams and one spirit to win, as its teaser. Talking about his experience of shooting for the theme song cricketer Dilshan said, “The song is vibrant and it does well to fuel our spirit during the game. Everytime it’s played, there’s a feeling that we must win and nothing less would do.”

The Mumbai Indians move forward with the theme of one big family. “That we may belong to different states, nationalities or regions but we must surge forward together like one family is the crux of the song. The video features a small girl who picks up a ball indicating that we intend to promote and popularise the education for all,” said a spokesperson of the team.

The video has given a lot of prominence to Sachin and has him in every clip. The Kochi Tuskers Kerala theme song has the essence of Kerala. The video is conceptualised by director Priyadarshan.

“We have merged cricket with the history of Kerala, its martial arts like Kalaripayattu. The video portrays the aggression of the players and prods them to win,” said Ashvir Khurana from the team. Most songs have a certain speed, rhythm and beats that are infectious. They won’t tie you down to your seats but you’d be forced to stand up and do a jig or two.
