One of the most productive ways of utilising time during  summer holidays is a part-time job. Many youngsters in the City take up part time jobs, which along with being fun, are a nice way of making pocket money.

These jobs, which are either for a couple of hours or an entire day, are believed to be a nice way of developing inter-personal skills and provide the necessary change from regular routine. Metrolife asked youngsters in the City and the companies about the most popular jobs around and why students opt for them.

Shyma M S, a journalism student says, “Jobs in which you play the hostess are pretty popular. It mainly involves dressing up nicely for an event and inviting people. There are also ‘registration jobs’ where during exhibitions people are asked to fill forms giving out their details. Most of these jobs pay close to Rs one thousand for a day’s work. ‘Wedding jobs’ are really fun as you are provided ornaments and clothes to match the occasion.

From the make up to how you look – everything is taken care of by them. I mainly do summer jobs to earn a little extra cash. Most of these jobs are fun because you meet a lot of people and get good exposure.”

Professionals at event management companies also claim that during summers, the number of students opting for jobs is considerably higher. Deepthi M, from an event management company,  says, “Promotional and data entry jobs are quite popular among college kids. All manpower requirements for some of our events are catered to by the college students. This is more so during summers as they have their vacations. They are paid anywhere between Rs 700 and 1,500 a day.” Samantha P Rozario, a degree student on the other hand, is spending her time in helping the editing of a novel. “It is a three-hour job and five days a week. I get paid close to Rs 7,500 a month and really enjoy it.”

Pavithra Ghorcade, another degree student, says that the main motivation behind doing a summer job is money. “There isn’t any exposure involved. It is mainly done by people who are bored and want to make some pocket money.” However, Sushma Venkatasubbu, a professional, who did summer jobs while studying says that these jobs makes one realise the true value of money. “Once you earn it the hard way, you will think twice before wasting it,” she adds.
