'Develop Folklore varsity as model'

This was decided at a meeting of folklore experts of five districts of old Mysore region in Mandya on Saturday.

The special officer of folklore varsity, Ambalike Hiriyanna, folklore expert Dr  Ramegowda and other prominent personalities attended the meeting. Experts from five districts-Ramanagar, Hassan, Chamarajanagar, Mysore and Mandya participated.

Dr Hiriyanna said the Government has decided to establish the varsity at Shiggao in Haveri district and identified 537 acres of land. The activities would start soon after the government approved the draft.  “ I am collecting opinion of folklore experts of all districts.

One such meeting had been held in Dakshina Kannada”.

He said a proposal is before the Government to set up regional centres across the State.

Experts have suggested to bring out CDs, VCDs and documents on folklore and also to hold folklore programmes in educational institutions.

They have also suggested to open a post-graduate study centre to study folk arts in selected regions and inclusion of folklore as a subject in UPSC, KPSC and other competitive examinations. Karnataka Sanga President Dr Ramegowda and others were present.
