What is remarkable is the fact that vehicles have no more remained to be luxury commodity enjoyed by the riches. Today it has become a necessity and even common man is seen driving a car in a town like N R Pura.

As against the time when autorickshaws were found in tens, today there are over 100 autos in the town. Almost every other house in the village has a two-wheeler.

According to the statistics, only eight to ten two-wheeler used to get registered in the town in a month, couple of years ago. Today the numbers have gone up to 30. As many as 10 cars and autos each get registered every month.

When agriculture was the main occupation, here the income of the people too was not very high. But when farmers quit cultivating paddy and took to rubber, areca and plantain cultivation, their standard of living improved. With this, the purchasing capacity of the people too improved.

As the cost of rubber has reached Rs 230 per kg, the rubber growers are lining up to purchase vehicles. The applications in nationalised and co-operative banks for vehicle loans too has shot up remarkably.  Undoubtedly, it is a positive sign that people are opting to purchase vehicles but with the density of vehicles increasing, the congestion on road is also increasing causing inconvenience to people. The road widening plans mooted by the government too is going on at snail’s pace.
