'The Hindu' appoints new editor

Last Updated 22 April 2011, 17:48 IST

The daily has also decided to adopt the principle of separating ownership and management “not only on the editorial side” but “also on the business side.”

N Ram told a press conference that “appropriate changes are expected to be made in the next few months.” Out of India’s top ten English newspapers, eight are professionally run and two by the family. He said his paper “wants to set an example” and prepare for the future.

Ram said there was "no compulsion" for him "to step down. Some had demanded his resignation, but they were in a hopeless minority.

He said “young share-holders” in the company want professionals rather than the members of the family to run the editorial management. The changes  were under consideration for the last two years.

Ram said “The Hindu” has carried on with the family-run editorial management, but the world has changed.

It was difficult for members of the family to work with the editorial department. He ruled out any “back-seat driving” in editorial issues.

Ram rubbished reports that the daily was favoured with a full-page advertisement by the Telecom Ministry for its coverage on the 2-G scam.

He gave the list of 15 newspapers, including “The Times of India” and “The New Indian Express,” which received the same colour advertisement released by the Chaaya advertisement agency, Chennai, on May 22, 2010.
