Varied selection

Gallery Sumukha is displaying a selection from in-house stock of paintings, sculpture and photography by various artists at Gallery Sumukha, 24/10 BTS Depot Road, Wilson Garden.

There will be ‘Oil on canvas’ by Mukesh Sharma and ‘Mix­ed media sculpture’ by Nidhin V K. The exhibition will be held from 10.30 am to 6 pm (Monday to Saturday).

Unusual shots
National Gallery of Modern Art, Palace Road is organising ‘Homai Vyarawalla, a Retrospective’ till July 8, 10 am to 5 pm.

Curated by Sabeena Gadihoke, the exhibition showcases photogr­aphs taken by Homai Vyar­awalla, the first woman phot-
-o­journalist of independent India. On Fridays and Sat­u­­rdays, the exhibition is from 10 am to 7 pm. For details, call 22342338.

As part of the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, ‘Time and Space Gallery’ is presenting ‘MusicScapes’ by Subodh Poddar who will do live calligraphic paintings on stage, to songs rendered by Debalina Ghosh on ‘Bhanushingher Padabali’.

This will be held on May 13, 6.30 pm at Alliance Francaise. An exhibition of his colour acrylics on canvas and calligraphic paintings will be held from May 14 to 19 at Time and Space Gallery, Lavelle Road.

Fine strokes
Vijay Sarathy C N is holding an exhibition titled ‘Gaps in Rendering’ from May ­13, 6.30 pm onwards to May 17. The exhibition will be on from 11 am to 7 pm at Shanthi­road Studio/Gallery, No. 1 Shanthi Road, Shanthinagar. For details, call 99016­42312.

Ceramic touch
Mahua Gallery is holding twin exhibitions at its gallery in Sadashivanagar.  The shows are ‘A painter, a sculptor, a ceramist & a printmaker’.

This is an exhibition by four Bhopal-based women artists who have formed a gro­up and aim to exhibit the works all over the world. The second one ‘Creating with Ceramic’, is by nine ceramists from Bhopal. The works are on display till May 15.


Expressive moments
Rangashree B, a disciple of Radha Shridhar, will present her rangapravesha on May 15, 6.05 pm at ADA Rangamandira, opposite Ravindra Kalakshetra, J C Road.

Vandana Supriya will present her rangapravesha on May 15, 6.30 pm at JSS Auditorium, Jayanagar 8th Block.

She will be performing the traditional odissi repertoire accompanied by live music.

Nrityasari, an evening of kathak recital, will be held at Seva Sadan, 14th Cross, Malleswaram on May 15, 6.30 pm.

A dance ensemble by Anjana Gupta, Bharathi Vittal, Charumathi Srikant, Chitra Arvind and Sumana Ranjalkar will be presented on the occasion.


Ananya is organising Sangati’ a youth music festival, at Ananya Sabhangana, Malleswaram from May 18 to 21. On May 18, 6.30 pm, there will be a vocal recital by Roopa and Deepa — Kasaravalli Sisters.

They will be accompanied by Mattur R Srinidhi (violin), B S Anand (mridangam), Phanindra Bhaskar (ghatam). On May 19, 6.30 pm, there will be a flute recital by Manda Ananthakrishna Sharma. He will be accompanied by B K Raghu on violin, A Radhesh on mridangam and B J Kiran Kumar on khanjira.

On May 20, 6.30 pm, there will be a vocal recital by Amrutha Venkatesh. He will be accompanied by Anand Vishwanthan (violin), B S Prashanth (mridangam) and Tumkur Shashishankar (ghatam). On May 21, 6.30 pm, there will be a veena recital by Shubha Santosh accompanied by Adamya on mridangam and Amruth Kumar on morsing.

Shree Gurugaanalahari Sangeeta Sabha is holding its second anniversary celebrations called Sangeetotsav on May 14, 4 pm at Nayana Sabhangana, Kannada Bhavan, J C Road.

There will be vocal and tabla recital by students of Shree Gurugaana Lahari School followed by Hindustani vocal recital by Smita Bellur and Shivanand Herur.

‘Beyond Boundaries’
Smriti Nandan will hold Gita Gyana Yagna, a lecture series in English on Bhagavad Gita, by Guru Haridas on May 14, 9.30 am. On the same day at 6.30 pm, there will be a tribute to Tagore called ‘Beyond Boundaries’.

The programme will have Rabindra Sangeet, recitation, and reading of Tagore’s Sanyasi by S Ramaswamy and Smriti Nandan group. The venue is  Smriti Nandan Cultural Centre, 15/3, Palace Road. For details, call 22258091.

In concert
Hindustani Sangeeta Kalakara Mandali, along with Gokhale Institute of Public Affairs, is presenting ‘S M Kulkarni Memorial Concert’ on May 14, 6 pm.

On the occasion, there will be a Hindustani vocal recital by Ravindra Soragavi, accompanied by Ravindra Katoti on harmonium and Rajendra Nakod on tabla.  The venue is Gokhale Institute of Public Affairs, near BMS College of Engineering, Bull Temple Road, N R Colony. For details, call 26663810.

A musical programme called Yaadein-5 — Shammi Kapoor Nite will be held on May 21 at ADA Rangamandira, opposite Ravindra Kalakshetra, J C Road.

‘All Stars’
Bflat and the Swarnabhoomi Music Academy are presenting a concert, ‘All Stars’, at Bflat on May 26, 8.30 pm.

Ed Degenaro will be on guitar, Steve Zerlin on bass, Lyndon Rochelle on drums, James Carson on piano and Natalie John on vocals.

Veena strains
Vidyaranyapura Dharmika Trust is organising a veena concert by R A Dakshina Murthy at Hanuman Temple premises, HMT Layout, II Block, Vidyaranyapura on May 14.


‘The Hurt Locker’
American Corner, Bangalore is screening the film ‘The Hurt Locker’ on May 14, 12 pm at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.

Kalasindhu Academy and Nrityanjali is presenting a bharatanatyam master-class by legendary dancer Yamini Krishnamurthy. It will be held in the City till May 22. The workshop will be held at the Kalasindhu Dance Studio in Banashankari.

The valedictory function will be held on May 22, 6 pm at JSS Auditorium, Jayanagar. The master-class will culminate in a grand recital of Yamini Krishnamurthy’s works , including a ceremony to honour her presence in Karnataka.

‘Buddha Charitam’
Probal Gupta will present Buddha Charitam on Buddha Purnima, organised by Mahabodhi Society, at Sri Rama Mandir playground, 4th Block, Rajajinagar, on May 16, 9 pm. The languages that will be used are Manipravalam and Sanskrit. The English narration will be by Probal Gupta.
Book release
The book release of  ‘Does the Elephant Dance?’ by David M Malone will be held on May 19, 6.30 pm at Bangalore International Centre Auditorium, Teri Complex, 4th Main, 2nd Cross, Domlur Second Stage. For details, call 9886599675.

For children
AddressHealth is presenting ‘Inspire 2011’, a free summer weekend jamboree for children with wheezing, asthma and those who use inhalers. Featuring games along with yoga, art and craft, ‘Inspire’ will include games that will provide a fun-filled camp atmosphere at the same time impart valuable knowledge to the children themselves with respect to asthma.

The children will also be instructed on techniques like anger management and breathing techniques that will help them cope with the disease.
