Last Updated 20 May 2011, 17:27 IST

The National Commission for Women had sent a fact-finding team headed by its acting chairperson Yasmeen Abrar to Bhatta and Parsaul villages on May 12 to look into allegations of police atrocities on women during and after the clashes between farmers and police there early this month.

"A number of women deposed on how 12-15 policemen surrounded them, molested them and even stripped them. Cases of rape have also come up. This is a serious matter of atrocities on women," Abrar said.

There were also allegations of policemen using foul and derogatory language against the womenfolk. The report outlined complaints of policemen barging into villagers' houses and demanded a CBI probe into allegations of people being burnt alive.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, who went on a tour of the villages and sat on a dharna there before being arrested, had also made allegations about burning of people and rape of women in Bhatta and Parsaul villages.

The Uttar Pradesh government, however, has dismissed all the charges as baseless and said preliminary forensic reports of ashes collected from the area have ruled out presence of any human remains.
