He is survived by daughter Aparna Sen and grandaughter Konkona Sen Sharma, also an actress.
Apart from being a film critic, Dasgupta was a film maker of repute, besides being a film historian. In 1947, he was co-founder of Calcutta Film Soiciety along with Satyajit Ray and Harisadhan Dasgupta. It was also at Dasgupta’s initiative, among others, that the Federation of Film Societies of India was set up in 1959.
Dasgupta began his career as a college teacher and then dabbled in advertising later to become a well known film critic and historian.
In 2004, Dasgupta was honoured at the Osian Film Festival with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding writing on cinema.
