Last Updated 28 July 2009, 19:14 IST

“The demand of the localites that the Bangalore-Mangalore train should be extended till Karwar by using the Konkan railway has been brought to the notice of Union Minister Muniyappa. He has been convinced on the necessity of the extension. Efforts are on to provide a solution keeping in mind the available infrastructure,” said former Union minister Oscar Fernandes.

Talking to reporters at Hemmadi after visiting rain-affected areas on Sunday, he said “a clear picture regarding the entire issue will be emerged within a week”.

When asked about the proposed extension of the train upto Kannur, he said “a permanent solution would be drawn keeping all points in mind”.

He said the compensation for the rain damages would be decided on the basis of the State government’s report. “If necessary, a Central team will also visit the place once the State government submits the report. Compensation will be allocated on a specific criterion,” he added. To a question on the possible alliance between Congress and JD(S) in the by-polls, Oscar said “it is not the question of the decision of two persons, but something decided by two parties keeping in mind the interest of the whole State. The leaders will decide. However, I can’t comment since I did not participate in the meeting held at Delhi recently in this connection.”

MLC K Pratapchandra Shetty, former MP Vinaykumar Sorake, former MLAs Gopal Poojary, Vasanth V Salian and District Congress President M A Gafoor were present.
