June 5, the day of the event, is also the World Environment Day. As a result of the two events coinciding, TCS World 10k has partnered with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to make the run as ‘green’ as possible.

“This is the first time that India will be hosting the World Environment Day and India should be really proud of that,” Satinder Bindra, Director of UNEP, said. India earned the hosting rights after winning the bid.

“India are World cricket champions and I’m sure the way they are going, India will soon be World Environment Champions as well,” he added.

Over 20,000 participants are taking part in the event with 50 top athletes from across the world, including last year’s winners, competing for the big prize.

“This year’s World 10K has the best field assembled so far in the event’s history and we are truly grateful that along with that we can also achieve something socially to help the environment,” Vivek B Singh, joint managing director of Procam International, said.

“Reducing the race’s carbon footprint is our aim and we plan to make this race as carbon-free as possible.”

Vivek also said that they expected over two hundred foreign athletes to take part in the event. “Because the prize money is so high this year, a lot of athletes from around the world come on their own in hopes of finishing at the top,” added Vivek.
