10 Britons arrested for grooming underage girls for sex

Last Updated 04 May 2018, 02:08 IST

Following a three-month investigation, police raided homes across Manchester to smash the ring in one of the biggest operations ever carried out by the city's Serious Crime Division. The 10 men are being questioned on suspicion of trafficking for purposes of sexual exploitation.

The victims were reportedly given alcohol and drugs before being subjected to sexual abuse at homes in Manchester and Salford. The gang members spent weeks flattering the victims and showing them affection before luring them to the "sex parties".

The investigation began after some of the girls alerted social workers that they were being abused. Police said they have spoken to as many as 40 "potential victims", and witnesses said there could be more who have not yet been identified.

Assistant chief constable Terry Sweeney, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "I hope today's action shows people that the issue of sexual exploitation is one we take extremely seriously."
