An appeal to ban leather shoes was made by animal rights group — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), citing environmental concerns. The move is also aimed at checking alleged cruelty against animals.
From now on, leather shoes will be replaced by canvas shoes, which the government said are more comfortable, economical and eco-friendly. PETA spokesperson said other states need to follow suit to save the environment.
