Once again, Sonali Kulkarni will be seen in a pivotal role in her upcoming film Singham which will hit theatres on July 22. Directed by Rohit Shetty, this is a remake of the Tamil hit Singam. But Sonali doesn’t believe the original film has influenced her role in any way.

She says, “I refused to watch the movie as it helps you not get influenced by the original character thereby keeping the portrayal fresh and natural.” The film showcases the corruption and scams faced by the country. So how did she prepare for her role?

“The film, in general, isn’t the kind that requires one to learn a particular skill. Being aware and keeping in touch with reality was all we had to do. The whole film revolves around the shameless way corruption thrives.”

She adds, “Ajay is a no-nonsensical hardworking police inspector in Maharashtra and my character is the driving force for his position in life. My character has gone through injustice in life and Ajay fights for me.”  It is the first time she has worked with director Rohit Shetty and Ajay Devgan and she is in awe of them.

She says, “Rohit is an extremely relaxed director on the sets. But he puts in a lot of hard work and is always prepared before every shoot. There is something in him which really motivates you to give a fabulous performance. Actors are the most important people for him and he pampers them a lot.” She has the same to say about Ajay Devgan.

“One would be intimidated by him as he is a brilliant actor. But even though he is such a huge star, he doesn’t throw his weight around. He is very easy going. He is always ready for re-takes and gives cues. Acting with him was a great learning experience for me.”  She has fond memories of the time she spent during the shooting. She recalls an incident when they played a prank on her.

“While we were shooting in Goa, Rohit asked his assistant to brief me about my role saying there has been a small change. I was bewildered as the melodramatic scenes she was showing me weren’t a part of my script at all. Nevertheless, I ended up doing them and the entire crew broke into laughter.”

The film was shot over four months in Mumbai and Goa. She loves Goa for its naive beauty and lifestyle.  Apart from this, Bangalore will remain one of the places she will always remember. “Bangalore has given me lovely memories and great friends right from my first movie ‘Cheluvi’ with Girish Karnad. I always love spending time in the City ”

Over the years she has dabbled with theatre, writing and dance. So what next?

“Right now, I am looking forward to the release of Singham. Post that, I have two movies lined up — a Gujarati film called ‘End Of The Road’ and another one with director Umesh Kulkarni and actor Nana Patekar,” she says.
