M'rashtra rains bring Almatti close to brim

The inflow into the reservoir went up as it rained heavily in the Western Ghats region of Maharashtra, the Krishna river catchment area and many parts of Belgaum district over  the past few days. 

As many as 11 of the 26 gates of the reservoir were opened to let 40,000 cusecs  out of the reservoir on Tuesday evening.  About 42,000 cusecs were released through the hydel power unit. The inflow into the reservoir stood at 90,000 cusecs. There was 512 tmc ft of water in the dam. An inflow of 1.2 lakh cusecs is expected by Wednesday morning. 

Ready to tackle floods

Though there was some respite from rain in Belgaum and its surroundings on Tuesday, the district administration has geared up to meet any eventuality.

Almost all rivers in the district are in spate, but have not crossed the danger mark anywhere, barring a few villages in Chikodi taluk where seven villages have been cut off as roads were inundated.

People living on the banks of Doodhganga, Vedaganga, Panchaganga and Chikutra rivers are moving to safer places along with their belongings. The district administration is in constant touch with authorities in Maharashtra and are monitoring the situation, sources said.

Record footfalls at Jog

Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket, the four drop streams of the Jog Falls, are in their enchanting best, thanks to the copious flow of water from the Kargal reservoir and rains in the last few days. Visitors are flocking in large numbers for a glimpse of Jog Falls in all its glory.

However, rain have receded in the district and there was a sudden drop in the inflow into the reservoirs on Tuesday.

The water level in the Linganamakki reservoir rose by two feet due to the rain in the last 24 hours. While the inflow is 48,928 cusecs, the outflow is 1,785.5 cusecs.

The water level in the Bhadra reservoir has risen to 166.4 feet, while the inflow increased to 24,368 cusecs.

The inflow to the Tunga reservoir stood at 79,466 cusecs and outflow was 78,657 cusecs.
