When Kushalnagar based businessman Mohan Kumar and his son were kidnapped from Gokulam in the city, it was a woman who helped police draw initial sketch of suspects involved.

She rushed out of the house, responding to the cry for help from the hapless boy. The woman who saw the boy being dragged into a car, immediately alerted police.

However, she preferred to remain anonymous declining the police invitation, when they wanted to introduce her to media after successfully busting the case.

Likewise, there are many such stories of alert public who have helped sentinels in prevention and detection of crime. A lady on wheels fought back with the chain snatchers, when the latter tried to yank off the valuables in Metagalli police limits.

While a youth in his early 20’s, chased the fleeing chain snatchers risking his life and also succeeded in noting down their vehicle’s number plate. But, he had to pay a price for it.

The chain snatchers who had sensed the man behind, had warned him of doing anything brave and also assaulted him before letting him off.

However, it did less to dampen the spirit of the youth from giving police the valuable piece of information.

Youth power

A month ago, two youths refrained another two youths from making away with the booty, causing them (accused) fall off from the motorcycle they were riding, in Vijayanagar police limits.

Very recently Rajendra, an educationist opened fire from the licenced .32 revolver in his possession, succeeding in driving away the lumberjacks who had been felling the sandalwood tree in the compound of his house.

Earlier in the past too former Mayor Vasu, another prominent educationist of the city, had taken to similar act twice when the thieves raided the compound of his house not once but twice for sandalwood.

When the growing Mysore city has its own advantages and disadvantages, the alert public doing the role of police is welcomed by police only.

It has become a cliche, for the police appealing to the denizens to be partners in fighting the anti-social elements, most importantly in checking the proliferating crime graph.

It may be either in the way of disseminating information, alerting others about suspects, keeping tab on every happenings in the surrounding among others.

How can you help?

Helping police need not be misconstrued as  taking law into hands. It may be either by being more cautious while dealing with strangers or daring to take the plunge in the interest of others, which normally takes a beating fearing further consequences. Here are the examples;

*  Do not flaunt jewellery while going out too much to attract thieves.
*  If wearing jewellery is inevitable, avoid narrow lanes or less used roads.
*  In case of lonely woman, they should avoid coming into contact with strangers.
*  If you are going out of town, locking the house, inform local police.
*  Also don’t forget to collect basic info regarding the tenants.
*  If you have a house maid, it’s better advised to collect the related information.
*  If you come across any persons moving suspiciously alert police.

Crime graph

It’s no more a secret that chain snatching continues to haunt police with the surge in the number of cases.

Among nine classified cases- it’s ranked in top three after petty thefts and house burglary and thefts in night.
