Rain unleashes havoc, claims one life

Pradeep, the only son of Kumar couple from Mangaladevi died on the spot, while his sister Jessica survived some serious injuries. Pradeep was pursuing BCA in FMC College, Madikeri. The dead body was kept for the public to pay homage at APMC premises. The students and teachers from FMC paid tribute to Pradeep. Assembly Speaker K G Boapaiah, MLA Appachu Ranjan, CMC President Nanda Kumar, former President P D Ponnappa, Deputy Commissioner K M Chandre Gowda and others paid homage.

Hearing that Jessica had to attend PG counselling on Saturday, the Speaker and the MLA told the gief-stricken family that arrangements will be made to take her to Mysore for the counselling.

Speaker Bopaiah handed over a sum of Rs one lakh compensation to victim’s parents, on be half of the government. The MLA promised the family of providing them a new house under Ashraya scheme. CMC President Nanda Kumar handed over a cheque of Rs 50,000 to the victim’s family. 

Later speaking to the media persons, Bopaiah said that the areas in Mangaladevi Nagara and Chamundi Nagara were slope areas hence landslides are very frequent. There is a need to find a permanent solution to the problem. He also said that the government will bear the education expenses of a student who was injured after a tree branch fell on him in Virajpet on Thursday. 

MLA Appachu Ranjan expressed concern over the construction of illegal houses in the city. DC K M Chandre Gowda has declared holiday to the schools and colleges in Madikeri district on August 6.
