Replica of 'Gyarah Moorti' unveiled in city

A replica of “Gyarah Moorti”, a historic bronze statue at New Delhi was dedicated to the people of Mysore at Subbarayanakere Park, popularly called Freedom fighters’ park on Monday.

On the 65th independence day celebrations, a replica of the Dandi March was inaugurated here.

The eleven statues have been designed by Bangalore-based artist and sculptor Devaraj after the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) adopted a resolution to install the statues at the park at a cost of nearly Rs 20 lakh.

District in-charge minister S A Ramdas who inaugurated the statues said the eleven statues are the symbol of Indian pride and self respect.

“Mahatma Gandhiji opposed the tax imposed by the British on salt and led the salt satyagraha movement to fight the ban. It was approriate that the statues are installed in city as freedom fighters from Mysore have contributed in a big way for movement for independence.

 Subbarayana Kere park was a place where many freedom fighters deliberated, got inspiration to fight for the cause,” he said.

Programme suggested

He suggested the DDPI to bring out a programme to educate schoolchildren on the struggle for independence at Subbarayanakere park.

“Students of a government school can be brought here on every second Saturday and sensitised about the freedom movement that changed the face of our country,” he said.

Book planned

He disclosed that the government would soon bring out a book on freedom fighters from Mysore state of those days, portraying the contributions and sacrifice of famous personalities from the region made for free India.

Mayor Pushpalatha Chikkanna, deputy mayor Ravi, Mysore City Corporation commissioner K S Raykar, corporator K V Mallesh, Zilla Panchayat  president Sunitha Veerappa Gowda and MUDA chairman L Nagendra were among those present on the occasion.
