"The 18-year-old feline, which had been suffering from paralysis for quite some time, died late last night," Zoo Director Dr Sudarshan Panda said.

Stating that the life span of tigers is generally about 18 years, he said the post-mortem was performed at the College of Veterinary Sciences here.

With the death of Ashoka, as the animal was named, as many as 28 tigers, including 22 Royal Bengal tigers, are now left in the famed Zoological garden, zoo officials said.
