Inaugurating the outlet, Mangalore City Corporation Mayor M Shanker Bhat said that there is a need to incorporate state of the art technology in the field of fishing too so that India finds itself competent in front of big players in the fields like Thailand and Norway.

“Americans are result oriented and Japanese are management oriented.”

“ We could not make a mark in the field of fisheries despite huge population and huge coast line because of lack of understanding of cleanliness and hygiene,” he said.

Coastal Development Authority Chairman B Nagaraj Shetty said that state-of-the-art facilities have been created for selling frozen sea fish, fresh water fish, value added fishery products, ornamental fishes, aquarium and accessories in the kiosk, maintaining hygienic condition.

This outlet is air conditioned and is equipped with modern equipment like serve over counters, display deep freezer, visi cooler and flake ice machines.

“There are plans to set up 1,000 such units in various places in a span of a year or two.

Once a chain of outlets are created, it will be run under franchise system,” Shetty said and added that each unit is put up at a cost of Rs 20 lakh.

MLA N Yogish Bhat said that the unit has all the potential to be successful. He suggested that a sea food counter could be put up at the outlet itself to provide better value added fish products to customers.

College of Fisheries Founder Dr H P C Shetty, KFDC Chairman Ramachandra Baikampady, Fishermen Leader Vasudev Bolur among others were present.

A fish dressing/cutting section is also created for the benefit of the public. In aquarium section, different imported and Indian aquariums, bowls, aquarium accessories, fish feed and different species of aquarium fishes are available.
