Ryder in drink trouble

Last Updated 11 May 2009, 16:45 IST

Media reports in New Zealand claimed Ryder, playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, was under the influence of alcohol and had to be stopped by security personnel.

The reports prompted Ryder’s mentor, Murray Deaker,  to issue a statement in which he admitted that Ryder was involved in an alcohol-related incident but denied the player being restrained by security guards.

“Jesse’s had over a hundred days of sobriety and has made enormous progress during that time, on and off the field.

“Now for that to continue, he needs support and moves have already been made to assist him to get back on top,” Deaker was quoted as saying by www.stuff.co.nz.

Ryder has been struggling with alcohol problems for quite a while and on one occasion, he had smashed a glass window in a Christchurch bar while drunk.
