Hazarika's golden voice falls silent

A hospital spokesperson said the vocalist from Assam died at 4:30 pm due to multiple organ failure. His body will be flown to Guwahati on Sunday morning. The singer had been undergoing treatment at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital since September.  Early this week, he developed infection in kidneys and was put on renal dialysis.
Though he was reported to be critically ill, initial observations indicated “positive response to treatment.” However, his condition deteriorated in the past two days.
 The Dada Saheb Phalke award winner and Padma Bhushan awardee had been in and out of hospital since early June this year.  His long-time companion and well-known progressive film maker Kalpana Lajmi was at his bedside. On Septemar 8, he even celebrated his birthday in the ICU ward. The balladeer, in a career spanning over 75 years, composed music, penned lyrics and made films.
