In the tournament opener on Tuesday, Germany will take on Australia, while India will play New Zealand later in the day, the chairman of the tournament organising committee, Squadron Leader Kamal Chaudhary, informed on Monday.

He also revealed that Delhi’s Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit will inaugurate the opening ceremony of the championship, which will be held over a period of five days.

The tournament, which for the first time will have junior teams competing for the title, will see a total of eight matches, starting from the round robin league and leading to the finals.

Indian captain Poonam Rani felt the tournament will provide a great opportunity to build a team for the 2013 World Cup.

“Its a new team, the girls have come together for the first time, it will be a great opportunity for us to test our skills and build a strong unit for the Junior World Cup to be held in India in 2013,” said Rani on the eve of the tournament opener.
