The court also dismissed his request to stay the implementation of the order to facilitate the filing of an appeal in Supreme court. The court added that Jayarajan can approach the Supreme court. Jayarajan was taken to the central jail at Thiruvananthapuram immediately.

The order comes in a case initiated suo moto by a full bench of the high court against Jayarajan for allegedly making offensive remarks against judges during a speech which criticised the court’s decision to ban wayside public meetings. While delivering the judgement, the high court noted that Jayarajan had criticised the judges without studying the judgement and had continued to criticise the court while proceedings in the contempt of court case were on.

Though Jayarajan has approached the Supreme court against the Kerala High court’s decision to initiate legal proceedings against him, the apex court dismissed his petition.
Jayarajan’s advocate argued that the epithets used by him against the judges could actually mean that judges were wise men. The court did not accept this argument.
Jayarajan is the third CPM leader in the state who had been sentenced in a contempt of court case. Earlier CPM general secretary and former chief minister E M S Namboothiripad and former minister Paloli Muhammad Kutty had been sentenced in contempt of court cases.
