SC to hear violation of bail rights of accused

A three-judge bench he­aded by Altmas Kabir decided to hear the matter as senior counsel Ranjit Kumar and Mukul Rohtagi claimed that the courts were denying the accused bail against the judicial dictum - bail is rule and jail an exception.

Kumar said that the co­urts were not allowing bail pl­ea of the accused in high profile cases attracting undue media interest.

Media was pre-judging the cases and trying to influence the conduct of judges, who were also wary of adv­erse confidential reports being filed against them, he said. The 2G spectrum allocation scam is an example wherein at least eight high-profile accused, including DMK MP Kanimozhi, are in jail after repeatedly being denied bail even after charges were framed against them.
