The victims have been identified as Puttamma, 47, and her daughter Shylaja, a police constable attached to the KR Pet Rural station.

Shylaja’s marriage was fixed with Ravi, an employee of a private factory on the outskirts of the city. The wedding was due on December 4.

Police said Puttamma and Shylaja boarded the Chamundi Express train to Bangalore at 6.45 am, after visiting their ancestral house at Soppina Keri at Mandi Mohalla. When they saw one of their relatives on the platform, they got off the train to invite them to Shylaja’s marriage. But the train started moving and the mother and daughter rushed to board it.

Puttamma had almost climbed the coach along with her daughter. However, the train tickets slipped from Puttamma’s hand and she leaned forward to get hold of them. It was at this juncture that both fell off the train. Though Puttamma did not suffer any external injuries, Shylaja was injured seriously. She had damaged her spinal cord and sustained a fracture in her left hand.

Anxious passengers raised an alarm, forcing the guard to signal the train to stop. Both were immediately rushed to KR Hospital in an ambulance. But Puttamma was declared brought dead. Shylaja is undergoing treatment in the ICU of a private hospital. The Railway Police have registered a case.
