Enraged over a truck driver for not letting him to overtake the vehicle, an ex-serviceman of the Indian army fired at the driver in west Delhi on Tuesday night, police said.

Ranvir Singh Malik, 42, has been arrested and no one was reportedly injured in the incident.

Malik fired at truck driver Khalid, a resident of Haryana, when he was not allowed to overtake the truck near ESI hospital on Ring Road in Rajouri Garden area of west Delhi, said Additional Commissioner of Police (west) V Renganathan.

Malik, a resident of Nangal Raya area in Delhi Cantonment, was arrested and a 7.65 mm pistol and one live cartridge were seized.  Khalid was on his way to his village when Malik signaled him to stop his vehicle, which Khalid refused. An angry Malik overtook the truck, got down from his car and then fired at Khalid. However, he missed his aim and fled from the spot, Renganathan said.

“After crossing the Raja Garden flyover, Khalid saw some traffic personnel near Marble Market on Ring Road and sought help. In the meantime, Malik also reached the spot and got down with the pistol. But he was overpowered by the police,”  the officer said.

“Malik retired as Subedar Naik from the Indian Army and is working as a male nurse. He was driving after consuming alcohol,” the officer said. A case of attempt to murder has been registered.
