Going nuts

It’s the season of groundnuts in the taluk. Heaps of groundnuts are a common sight in many villages.

Moreover, it’s no less than a fest for the villagers, especially women, who earn enough money during this season. And for others, digging into the heaps and munching the nuts is beyond just a time-pass.

Unmindful of the freezing December winter, women go about their job from dawn to dusk. Employed by landlords,  collect nuts in huge baskets. Depending on the quantity of nuts collected, they are paid.

“There is no farming activity during November and December. But the yield is quite good this year. Working at such fields, fetches us some money for our domestic needs,” Lakshmidevamma, of D Kothapalli told Deccan Herald. Many take up the job so as to support the family.

Groundnuts are grown in Gothampalli, Thimpalli, Chilanayakanapalli, Billur, Makavelu, Boyipalli, Jeekavadapalli, Ramanapaldi and Iddalurupalli. Most of these villages are hit by drought but the groundnut yield has brought smiles on their faces.
