Snow, rains continue in parts of N India; two dead in UP

Snow and rain in parts of north India today caused a dip in day temperatures even as the continuing spell of fog in the region claimed two lives in Uttar Pradesh.

In national capital Delhi, overnight rains added to the chill with the city recording a maximum of 17.7 deg C, three notches below normal though the minimum settled at 12.5 degrees, up five degrees, the MeT office said.

In Uttar Pradesh, two people were killed and another injured when their motorcycle dashed against a tree due to poor visibility, officials said.

Light rainfall was recorded in parts of the state.

Rains coupled with icy cold winds made maximum temperatures slide across Punjaband Haryana, the weather office said.

Amritsar received heavy rainfall where the maximum dropped to 13 deg C, down six notches. Ludhiana, which recorded light rains, reeled under intense cold during the day at 13.7 degrees. Patiala's maximum settled at 14.8 deg C.

Chandigarh shivered as rains lashed the city during the day, causing the maximum to drop to 17 deg C, down two notches.

In Haryana, Ambala recorded a maximum of 16 degrees, down three notches, after heavy rains lashed the town. Hisar witnessed an increase in minimum temperature, recording a low of 12.9 deg C, up eight degrees.
Karnal, which received 9.4 mm of rains, registering a maximum of 16.2 deg C, down three notches, the MeT Dept said.

In Himachal Pradesh, fresh spell of snow occurred in several parts the state. Shimla, Dharamsala, McLeod Ganj, Manali and Dalhousie experienced 15 cm to 30 cm of snow till this afternoon.

The Rohtang pass (13,050 ft), gateway to tribal Lahaul Valley received 150 cm of snow while Dhundhi, Mari and Solang Nalla recorded 120 cm, 110 cm and 70 cm of snow respectively.

The mercury dipped to minus 0.7 deg C in Shimla while it dropped to minus two degrees in Manali and 2.4 degrees in Solan and Bhuntar, the MeT office said.
