A 32-year-old man was arrested for smuggling foreign liquor in the national Capital, police said on Sunday.

The accused was identified as Mahender Singh, a resident of Badarpur in south-east Delhi. He was arrested from Fatehpur Beri in south Delhi on Friday evening, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Chhaya Sharma.

“We have recovered 62 bottles of expensive foreign liquor,” said Sharma.

Police received a tip-off that a man would be trying to smuggle liquor in Delhi in a new Tata Winger Car on Friday. “We laid a trap and the car was signalled to stop but the occupant tried to escape. After a brief chase, we compelled the driver to stop the vehicle and overpowered the accused,” said Sharma.

Singh told police that he used to procure foreign liquor from Gurgaon in Haryana and supply it to night clubs of five star hotels, high end social parties and farm houses.

“In order to have a lavish lifestyle, he indulged in the business of supplying foreign liquor in Chandigarh, Haryana and Delhi,” added Sharma.
