For anyone who wants a taste of student life in the UK, the ‘British Council’s Education UK Exhibition’ in Bangalore on February 6, 2012 should be the destination.

The exhibition is being held at the Vivanta by Taj – MG Road, Bangalore and representatives from more than 58 UK institutions will be present to meet and provide guidance to aspiring students.

The exhibition will travel to four cities in India and will have more than 100 representatives of over 70 UK institutions participating. The exhibition begins in Hyderabad and will travel to Chennai, Bangalore and Pune. More than 4,000 students are expected to visit the exhibitions.

This one-day exhibition in Bangalore will give students direct access to information on studying for an undergraduate, postgraduate or research degree and also on student life and culture in the UK. British Council’s Education UK Exhibitions are a one-stop-shop where all queries about studying and living in the UK are answered.

This time around, a UK Border Agency (UKBA) stall has been introduced and will be manned by the officers of the British Deputy High Commission, Chennai, who will assist visitors with all queries pertaining to student visa regulations and policies.  Academicians from UK institutions will also deliver seminars on subjects like Biotechnology, MBA or MSc — which is better and ‘Engineering: An Update in Skill and Knowledge’. Students can also explore the different kinds of scholarships that are available.

Entry to the exhibition, which starts at 1.00 pm and remains open until 7.00 pm, is free for students. To register online and for information about the participating institutions and seminars, log on to www.educationuk-in.org.

The UK is a very attractive destination for students because:

Courses are shorter in duration as compared to other countries. Indian students show keen interest in the one-year Master’s and three-year undergraduate courses (except Scotland) in the UK.

Post completion of studies students with a job offer can stay back in the UK and work under Tier 2 (General).

International students qualify for discounts on travel, entertainment and health care.

Popular subjects — Management and Business Studies, Engineering, IT and Communications, Art and Design, Life Sciences (Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology), Media Studies, Paramedical courses (Physiotherapy, Pharmacy), Law.

Studying in the UK involves two kinds of costs: tuition fee and the living costs.

The costs vary for different subjects.

The ‘average’ tuition fee per annum is estimated as below:

Arts and Humanities: £4,000 to £9,000

MBA: £4,000 to over £30,000

Science: £7,500 to £12,000

Clinical: £10,000 to £ 21,000

Living cost: £6,000 — £10,000 per annum and varies according to location
