A truck loaded with liquor was seized by Delhi Police on Wednesday.
The liquor was meant to be used in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.

Sunder Lal, 40, a resident of Faridabad in Haryana, was arrested for supplying illicit liquor to bootleggers in Delhi and nearby areas. Eighty cartons of liquor were recovered by police.

“The illicit liquor was to be used for wooing voters in the forthcoming UP Assembly elections,” said Ajay Chaudhary, additional commissioner of police (south-east).
Police said 2400 quarter bottles, 300 bottles and 144 half bottles of illicit liquor have been recovered.

“Recently, several complaints were received regarding an organised gang involved in supplying illicit liquor in various parts of Delhi and nearby states. They specially supply the brand of liquor which is prohibited in Delhi. The demand of the liquor is high now-a-days due to Assembly elections in UP,” said Chaudhary.

Many police teams were formed to track down the liquor smuggling gang.
“The details were minutely analysed. We had evidence against the gang leader, Satish, a resident of Haryana, whom we suspected to be involved in this,” police stated.

Accused escapes

“On January 31, on a tip-off, we came to know that Satish, with his close aide Lal, will come towards Nizzamuddin. Several traffic blockades were put in place to nab them.

The truckdriver Lal, was caught though he tried to run. However, Satish escaped taking advantage of heavy traffic,” said Chaudhary.

Lal revealed that he along with Satish was going to deliver the liquor to one Titto in Ghaziabad in UP, who would further distribute it to voters and supporters of various candidates in the Assembly elections.

Lal also told police he had met Satish through a common friend.

“Satish lured him into earning quick money through his driving skills,” said Chaudhary.
Police have stepped up vigil to catch more bootleggers.
