An Indo-Dutch musical evening awaits the City as the legendary Pandit family of the Gwalior Gharana and an Amsterdam-based tabla player Heijo Dijker are all set to perform in the City.

They promise to bring an electic mix of pop, new age dance and music with a touch of India classicism.

The performance will also team up with Dutch guitarist Wim Den Herder and German saxophone and flute player Ulrich Bernd Schroeder, famous for his hit Sigh. The fusion will bring together the spirit of jazz, combined with the richness and melodies of Indian classical singing in different traditions. Wim is known for his pop, jazz and world music style.

The musicians will perform in the City on February 13 at Kamani Auditorium. The concert has been organised by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

“ICCR strives to articulate and demonstrate the diversity and richness of the cultures of India, along with other countries the world over. This is another step in our journey towards building a dialogue and collaboration between diverse performing traditions,” says Dr Suresh K Goel, director general, ICCR.

Acknowledged as the scion of the Gwalior musical gharana, Meeta Pandit who will also be performing at the event, is the granddaughter and disciple of Padma Bhushan Pandit Krishnarao Shankar Pandit, the doyen of Northern Indian classical music in the 20th century and the daughter of legendary Pandit Laxman Krishnarao Pandit. Besides khayal, Meeta is equally popular with genres of tappa, bhajan, thumri and Sufi. She has a number of albums to her credit, the latest one being Best of Hindustani Classical Music from 1902-2010.

Tabla player Heiko was drawn into classical Indian music and the beauty of India after years of traditional training with Bhaswaraj Bhendigeri. And later took training from Ustad Faiyaz Khan. He has also recorded with music director Shankar Mahadevan and legendry flute player Hari Prasad Chaurasia.

The Indo-Dutch fusion music concert will also be organised in Mumbai and Chennai on February 15 and 18 respectively.
