Security tightened in Pushkar

Last Updated 14 February 2012, 20:10 IST

In the aftermath of the terror attack on the Israeli embassy car in New Delhi, high alert has been declared in the holy city of Pushkar on Tuesday, where the Israelis have their community centre “Chabad” house.

Hotel owners have been warned to verify the identity of the customers before issuing a room for them. Vigilance has also been stepped up as Pakistan–born terror master mind, David Headley, had also been staying in front of the Chabad house unnoticed.

Security at the community centre was increased with the gates and roof being manned by armed police. “Mostly plain–clothes cops have been deployed in the area and have been instructed to report suspicious activity,” said a senior official. The central vigilance agencies and armed forces including BSF and ITBP have already mapped the region and devised rescue plans in the last six years. “What is important, is to make the atmosphere safe for the tourists who visit this place,” he said.

Vigilance has been specially increased in markets with plain–clothes cops at bus stands keeping an eye on the passengers and vehicles entering Pushkar.
