Last Updated 01 September 2009, 19:14 IST

BJP Yelahanka MLA S R Vishwanath, who has taken the lead in this regard, told reporters on Tuesday that members of various NGOs, environmentalists, heads of religious institutions will take part in the padayatra, which will pass along the river course.

The participants of padayatra during their overnight stay will organise cultural programmes to spread awareness. Nearly 50 places will be covered during the padayatra, he said.

Arkavathy river was once the lifeline of around 1,210 lakes around Bangalore. Besides, lakhs of people were dependant on it for drinking water. But rampant encroachment led to the drying up of the river.

Now, the BWSSB has taken up a survey to identify the lost river course and vacate encroachment. The government has provided Rs 2 crore for this purpose.
