The Election Commission has granted Union Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma’s request for a personal hearing to explain his position on minority quota.

The EC, which met here to consider Verma’s request for a personal hearing, decided in favour of it. The minister is now likely to appear before the Commission on Friday for the interview.

"The Minister had sought a personal hearing before the Election Commission on the matter and the poll body granted him so. He will explain his position either in person or through his lawyer on February 24 now," a senior official said.

Sources said the minister would offer his views on why action should not be initiated against him for allegedly violating the election model code of conduct. They said he would explain his remarks on the minority sub-quota issue to the EC.
