BJP seeks CAG report on Yamuna

Last Updated 28 February 2012, 19:33 IST

Slamming Delhi government over failure to check pollution in river Yamuna, BJP leader V K Malhotra on Tuesday demanded that the records of Yamuna Cleaning Project be audited by the Comptroller and Auditor General and its report made public.

The Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly said it was a matter of shame that despite spending crores of rupees and the courts’ voicing their ire, the condition of the river has worsened, risking the lives of over 18 million people.

“Delhi government had, on several occasions, made tall announcements for cleaning of river Yamuna. It has even sent delegations to foreign countries by spending crores of rupees, and prepared many new projects but the river remains polluted,” Malhotra said in a statement. He said once again the Supreme Court has passed severe strictures against Delhi government for its failure to check pollution of river Yamuna.

During the past 13 years, the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court had expressed their concern more than 13 times and ‘scolded’ Delhi government for its failure, in spite of that the river is 13 times more polluted now, the BJP leader said.

“The Supreme Court, while expressing its concern over the ‘deteriorating condition of Yamuna’ said it would be a folly to call Yamuna as river as it has turned into a filthy drain. Even fish are unable to survive in the river,” he claimed.

All projects for treatment plant on filthy drains and provision of parallel drains to provide treated water to adjacent agriculture land are in deep freezer, he said.

He also alleged that due to criminal negligence of the government, the lives of more than 18 million people living in Delhi are in jeopardy.

Malhotra said the citizens would like to know the details of where the thousand crore of rupees have been spent in the name of cleaning of Yamuna and asked Delhi government to get all the records with Yamuna Cleaning Project audited by the CAG and make the report and the audit objections public.
