At least 11 letters posted to Delhi High Court post office carried fake postage stamps. This has brought into light possibility of circulation of such stamps in the national capital.

Police came to know about circulation of fake stamps in the city after senior superintendent of post office in New Delhi (central division), Binti Chaudhury, lodged a police complaint at Tilak Marg police station in central Delhi on March 9.

Chaudhury told police that the first case came to light on October 21, 2011 when the officials at the Delhi High Court post office found that nine articles received had fake stamps of denomination Rs 10 and 20 affixed on them.

He said three days later two more stamps were received of denomination Rs 20 at the same post office.

"All these stamps were found to be fake," Chaudhury told police.

According to police, envelopes with fake stamps were submitted by lawyers to the registrar's office for sending court documents to related persons in their respective cases.

A list of addressees and those of the senders (lawyers) were provided to the court and Chaudhury had given it to police for investigation, a senior police officer said.

“A case under section 263A (prohibition of use of fictitious stamps) of Indian Penal Code has been registered and investigation are on to arrest those involved in the circulation of fake stamps,” the officer added.
