Babu Amin, Sadashiv Salian, Dasu Bangera selected for Tulu academy awards

Bannaje Babu Amin (Tulu literature and research), Sadashiv Salian (Tulu drama and cinema) and Dasu Bangera (Tulu folklore) have been selected for the academy honours. Each award will comprise Rs 10,000 cash, memento, shawl and certificate.

Bannanje Babu Amin hails from Udupi district. His ‘Koti Chenaya’ was published in 1982 which saw fifth reprint in 2006. In collaboration with Mohan Kotian, he published a voluminous research work on the Garodis of Tulunadu in 1990. He also worked for Akshaya and Karnataka Malla in Mumbai. ‘Pupoddolu’, ‘Daivagala Madilalli,’ ‘Manecchi’ and ‘Nudikatt’ are some of his works.

Sadashiv Salian from Mangalore has directed more than 500 plays in Tulu, Kannada, Marathi and Hindi. He entered Tulu cinema in 1980. ‘Bhagyavantedi,’ ‘Badkere Budle,’ ‘Dareda Seere,’ ‘Satya Olundu?’ ‘Pettayi Pili,’ ‘Onthe Adjust Malpi’ are some of the Tulu movies wherein he acted. He has also performed the anti-hero roles in over 42 Kannada films.
Dasu Bangera, 75, has spent about 50 years in performing the roles of folk deities. Jarandaya, Jumadi, Marl Jumadi, Pancha Jumadi, Panjurli, Mayandal, Odiltaya are some of the deities for whom he was an instrument.

Book awards

The academy books awards have been announced for Bola Chittaranjandas Shetty (Binnedi, poetry), Nagaraj Gurupura (Tambila, drama) and Muhammed Kulai (Mittabail Yamunakka, translation).

Each award comprises Rs 5,000 cash, memento and certificate.

Bola Chittaranjandas Shetty is known for his well-appreciated novel ‘Alidulidavaru,’ who recently published ‘Onti Obbanti’. The award winning ‘Binnedi’ maintains the shades and style of Siri paddana. According to critics, it is a recreation of the Siri paddana.

Nagaraja Gurupura’s ‘Tambila’ highlights the village of Tulunadu. Muhammed Kulai’s work is the Kannada translation of ‘Mittabail Yamunakka,’ a Tulu novel by D K Chowta.
