Summer, the season of camps

Last Updated 06 April 2012, 16:36 IST

Earlier there was a time when the children eagerly waited for the schools to close so that they can pack their things and leave to their relatives’ homes on vacation.

Many waited for summer vacation because it was the time when they could really breath free without burden on homework and studies.

Summer is the time when most of the small lanes, maidans see little kids to youth playing cricket. But now, in a world of competition, where there is no time to waste, scenario has changed even for the kids.

Parents are more careful in choosing what their child should do during summer vacation. The parents do not think twice before spending a thousand or two to enroll their kids to an array of summer camp options available before them.

“During holidays, children used waste their time either watching television or playing, which makes the holidays so unproductive. From this fact, the idea of summer camps for children budded,” said Glen Patrao, correspondent of Bejai Tenderfoot Pre-school.

“We are conducting the summer camps yearly and the response from the public is overwhelming”, he said.  The camps provide children the opportunity to sharpen their skills and also to find out what best they can do. Summer camps include spoken English classes, painting, music, clay modeling, personality development etc.

At Nehru Maidan, Dakshina Kannada Cricket Association (DKCA) is conducting its yearly summer coaching camp. More than 250 students have registered for the camp, said DKCA Manager Kasturi Balakrishna Pai. “Once the SSLC exams are over, more number of boys will be coming”, he said.

Camp is conducted in two batches- morning and evening. Experienced coaches are coming to teach the kids the primary lessons of Cricket. At Sahodaya Ground near Balmatta, Mangalore Cricket Academy is also conducting coaching camp.

Former UAE International Rajarathna is the head coach of the camp here.Dakshina Kannada Football Association’s summer camp will be starting from April 15, informed DKFA Chairman Muhammad Aslam.

National level coach Shanthakumar is giving coaching for students up to PU level. Different Chess Associations, clubs are also conducting summer camps for the children.
