Muthukumar, the victim’s husband, was arrested by the police.

Sunitha married Muthukumar nine months ago. Both hailed from Tamil Nadu, but Sunitha’s parents had settled in Bangalore long ago. Muthukumar was currently unemployed, police said.

Sunitha’s parents told police that they had spent Rs four lakh on their daughter’s marriage, which included dowry. Differences cropped up among the couple when Muthukumar allegedly demanded money from his in-laws. He abused Sunitha and her parents and even threatened of dire consequences if his demands were not fulfilled, police said.

Muthukumar had reportedly availed huge loans from various sources in Chennai and could not repay. He landed in trouble after creditors started demanded money. The couple fought on the same issue on Thursday and Muthukumar went out of the house. Sunitha locked herself up in the house and allegedly hanged herself from a ceiling fan using her saree. Neighbours, who grew suspicious as the house was locked for a long time, saw through the window and found her body hanging. They informed the police. There was no death note, police said.
