District-in-Charge Minister S Suresh Kumar directed the officials to complete the work within a time frame.

Speaking at a review meeting here on Tuesday, he said, few work are moving in a snail’s pace in Chikmagalur CMC limits. There is lack of coordination among various departments in the district. The officials of various departments should discuss the work before implementing.

He expressed displeasure over delay in the completion of work related to the development of Kotekere and canals, Basavanahalli kere.

The work should be completed at the earliest after holding talks with the department of minor irrigation, and CMC Commissioner. The work on desilting of the five drains should be completed within a month.

When Chikmagalur Development Authority President Rajappa asked on encroachment of Basavanahalli kere, the officials said “the survey has been carried out and we are demarcating the border.”

MLA C T Ravi said that Raja canals which passes through Chikmagalur town have been encroached.

Hence, when it rains, all the water enters the houses in the vicinity. The encroachment of the canal should be identified and the land should be reclaimed.

The CMC and the department of Minor Irrigation should carry out joint survey on the property of the CMC. If the land belonging to the Raja canal is reclaimed, then flood water will not enter the houses, he added. The CMC members said that two bridges near Kathrimaramma temple are in deplorable condition and measures should be initiated to repair it at the earliest.

Underground drains

The Minister said that the work on underground drains should be completed within a stipulated time.

The officials should stop speaking in favour of the contractors.

The work on drains taken up by the Karnataka Water Supply and Sewage Board should be completed at the earliest. Similarly, the work on K M Road should be completed.

MLA Ravi said inspite of constructing four overhead tanks in Chikmagalur, water could not be supplied to the citizens.

The inflow of water to Hirekolale tank has been increased.
Separate pipelines have been installed to supply water. However, the work on water treatment plant at Ramanahalli is being delayed.

The Minister said that Rs 2 crore was released for laying footpaths. The work should be started at the earliest.

Illegal sand mining

In a separate meeting, the Minister said that new sand mining policy will be implemented effectively in the district to check illegal sand mining.

He said sand will be supplied to the construction work within the framework of the law.

“Measures will be taken to check illegal sand mining in the district. I have already discussed the issue of illegal sand mining with the Deputy Commissioner. There is artificial shortage of sand in the district,” he said.

Chikmagalur CMC President C R Premkumar, CMC Vice-President Shilpa Rajashekar and Deputy Commissioner Rangaswamy was present.
