The Delhi government will take steps to extend the reach of Delhi Milk Scheme products to all parts of the Capital. A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting chaired by chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday.

Food and supplies minister Haroon Yusuf and commissioner Dharam Pal were present.DMS’s capacity to produce milk is five lakh litres per day, but it is producing only three lakh litres currently, a DMS official said.

The reach of DMS milk supply is limited to old localities and its products are unavailable in new colonies such as Rohini, Dwarka, cooperative group housing societies, slums and unauthorised colonies. DMS officials say lakhs of poor people in Delhi do not get quality milk at affordable prices.

They say DMS can increase milk supply by another two lakh litres per day, taking the tally to five lakh litres per day, if the government helped the agency in extending its reach to localities traditionally not served by it.

Dikshit told DMS officials that the government will involve the registrar of co-operative societies and other agencies to start an expansion programme.

DMS has readied several milk-dispensing cabins to start supplying milk immediately.

Dikshit also told the food and supplies commissioner to print an advertisement soon, calling people who are interested in joining the business of milk distribution in the capital to show initiative.
