CBI'll probe N-E cases if states fail: PC

Last Updated 02 May 2012, 20:36 IST

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday assured people of north-eastern states of full protection in the national capital and said he would order a CBI probe into the two cases of violence against them in Haryana and Bangalore if the states failed to pursue them.

Replying to a debate on the demands for grants for Home Ministry in the Lok Sabha, Chidambaram said students from the North-East “have all the rights to live” in the national capital like anyone else in the country. He said last year cases of violence against the people from these states dropped drastically.

“We are following both cases closely,” the home minister said. If the cases in Haryana and Bangalore are not pursued by the two states then “I will personally” ask the CBI to investigate the cases.

The home minister said the Centre was willing to have a dialogue with naxals provided they abjured violence. Unlike in the North-East, where the extremists were asked to lay down arms before the commencement of talks, the Centre had not put such conditions for talks with the naxals.

Chidambaram said the naxals “are clear in their aims” to overthrow the parliamentary system of government. He said the nation should develop clarity as to how to deal with the naxals. Chidambaram said internal security “is shared responsibility” and states “need to accept this principle.”
