Bengal Cong MPs to propose Pranab's name for Prez post

To put Mamata Banerjee under pressure, the Congress MPs of the West Bengal, have decided to meet Congress President Sonia Gandhi and propose the name of Pranab Mukherjee as the Presidential candidate.

“So far, the party has not declared any name but as there has been no President from West Bengal, we will tell Soniaji that the people of the state are eager to see Pranab Mukherjee as the next President of the country,” Adhir Chowdhury, Congress MP from Behrampore in Murshidabad district, told Deccan Herald over phone.

The comment comes after six MPs from the state had a telephonic discussion with State Congress President Pradip Bhattacharya. They want to put pressure on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on this regard.

“If our party considers Pranab Mukherjee as the Presidential candidate then Mamata have to support him and in that case it would be moral victory for the Congress,” said a Congress insider.

Banerjee recently while giving an interview to a television channel said that she would prefer Lok Sabha Speaker Miera Kumar, former Governor of West Bengal Gopal Krishna Gandhi or former president A P J Abdul Kalam for the top post of the country.

When asked about Pranab Mukherjee — the son of Bengal, she ridiculed him as the ‘son of the world’. Reacting to Mamata’s comment, a part of Congress leadership accused her of blackmailing the Congress.
