Sand mining: two assaulted

Two persons were fatally attacked allegedly by the persons involved in illegal sand mining, on Thursday night at Jannapura.

Gonibeedu residents had staged stir under the aegis of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike on Thursday. When Girish, Mahesh, Sathish and Jagadish were returning home after taking part in the stir, some miscreants blocked their way and assaulted them.

During the fisticuff, Girish was grievously injured on the back. A case has been registered at Gonibeedu police station and Girish and Jagadish who have suffered severe injuries have been admitted to Mudigere MGM Hospital where they are said to be recuperating.

Stir by locals

Gonibeedu residents staged a stir protesting against the attack on the youth from the village.

Addressing the protesters village leader Arenahalli Prakash said that sand mining is going on in the region much against the order of the Court.

He said that heavy equipment are used to remove sand from the middle of the river due to which the flow of the river is affected.

Victim speaks

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Girish, who is also the Director of TAPCMS said that illegal mining is going on in river Hemavathi.

The authorities have not taken any action against it despite bringing the issue to their notice several times in the past.

“We will fight till illegal sand mining is completely curbed in the area,” he said.

Responding on the attack, Tahshildar C CHinnaraju said that inquiry will be held into the issue. Meanwhile no permit will be issued in the district till installation of GPS is completed.
