Cultural programmes to mark golden jubilee of Ganeshotsav

Last Updated 14 September 2009, 18:04 IST

The Vidyaganapati Seva Sangha in order to mark the golden jubilee celebration of the Ganeshotsav, has kept idols of Lord Eshwara and his family, Laxminarayana, and of course, Ganesha.

The attractive idols draw crowd from various places - far and wide  including Kolar, Tumkur, Hindupur and Penugonda.

Several cultural programmes will be held as a part of the month-long celebrations and artistes from other states will be invited to perform on the occasion.

When 32-member organisation began Ganeshotsava in 1960. They had invested 75 paise each and collected a fund of Rs 24.

Initially the Ganeshotsava was held at Eshwara Temple. In 1979 the Sangha built its own building on Dharmachatra Road, where Ganeshotava has been held annually from 1983 onwards.

The programme which were held for a week usually, was later extended to one month as number of cultural events increased. In 1969 the famous playback singer S P Balasubrahmanyam performed at the Ganeshotsava.

It has been a practice since past 59 years to host Nadaswara by artistes from Tamil Nadu and this will continue even this year.

However, the annual event seems to be losing its charm with the general public showing no interest. Earlier the public were eager to watch the programmes organised on this occasion by the Sangha while now the large crowd would not be seen, probably due to the invasion of television into all the houses.

Another reason is that the Ganeshotsava is now being held in each and every gulli across the town.

The convenors hope that the Ganeshotsava will be held even in future with same gusto. One of the founding member of the organisation Subramani recalled the encouragement, donation and help received from various people in organising the Ganeshotsav.
He expressed hope that the organisation will continue to receive the same support and encouragement in the coming years as well.
