Engineering a bright future

BRILLIANT MINDS

Engineers have to constantly come up with innovative ideas. Taking this notion seriously, three students from Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering have built a portable electric push scooter which can be used in spacious places like malls, companies and colleges.

Shashank Jaiswal, Siddhanth Grover and Satyajit Jaiswal, who are in their final semester of mechanical engineering, say the idea came to them after they saw corporate professionals using scooters in their office campus.

“Our scooter is sleek and portable. It runs at a speed of five kilometre per hour and on an average, a person weighing up to 70 kg can use it,” informs Shashank, who heads the team. The trio took almost three months to build this scooter.

“An interesting fact is that our country does not have any manufacturer for such scooters. One will have to import it and shell out at least Rs 35,000,” says Shashank.

However, the production cost of this scooter came up to Rs 8,500 which is less than one fourth of the actual price. “Keeping in mind the budget of the common people, we thought of keeping the cost of the vehicle less. So we used a normal DC motor brush to make it cost-effective,” he adds.

Talking about the power consumption, Siddhanth says it will be minimal.

“The vehicle can work continuously for two hours after four hours of charging,” he notes.
He further says the entire project went smoothly except the welding part.

Now, the three students are planning to customise the scooter and go for mass production as they feel that there is a good market for electric push scooters in
India.

“The vehicle is ideal for the people here. It will be useful even in IT companies,” says Shashank.

The students want to pursue their higher studies and get into the production line. Shashank, who hails from Chattisgarh, says he has been interested in production since childhood.

“My dad is into production because of which I got interested in this field. After graduation, I will pursue my masters in production,” he says.

Siddhanth, who is from Delhi, says even he would go for masters after the completion of his course. With such hard work and dedication, these three students can be sure of their bright future ahead.
