Coffee beans affected due to heat

Last Updated 29 May 2012, 17:14 IST

With no rain in Kalasa hobli since two weeks, the robusta coffee beans seem to be affected due to the extreme heat.

The rain that showered in Kalasa during the first week of April had resulted in the flowering of coffee plants and the rain that followed throughout April helped formation of coffee beans. However, since rain has not lashed from the first week of May till date the moisture content in the soil has vanished and the heat reaching 36 degree Celsius is seen affecting the beans.

In most of the plantations, the tender beans have already begun to wither. With no rain, it is not possible to provide fertiliser to the plants. The coffee growers say that lack of fertiliser too might be one of the reasons for the falling of coffee beans.
