Ryots fear drought even this year

Last Updated 01 June 2012, 17:17 IST

Though the sowing of seeds went on in full swing after monsoon made appearance in April, over the last 20 days there has been no rainfall at all. Due to this, all the saplings have started drying.

The region is gradually heading towards the drought situation, say the farmers of the region.

When the rain lashed during April-May, the farmers made debts to purchase seeds, fertilizer etc. Unfortunately, the delay in rain has ruined all the hopes of the farmers of getting good yield. Farmers in Yagati, Chaulahiriyur, Hirenallur, Panchanahalli, Singatagere, Sakharayapatna, Kasaba and Birur hoblis are desperately waiting for the rains.

“The rain has been deceiving us since the last two years. We have made debts to feed the land with fertilizer and also to get seeds for sowing. We do not understand why the gods have turned hostile towards us,” said Shivu, a farmer from Yallambalase, who is prepared to face the drought even this year.

In Hirenallur area, Onion is grown in thousands of acres. Last year the onion crops were lost due to excess rains. However, this year the farmers are waiting for the rains to sow onion seeds for cultivation.

Kadur region received 12.9 mm rainfall in May. Yagati received 88.2mm, Singatagere received 33.4 mm, Panchanahalli received 34.3mm, Sakharayapatna received 9.2mm, Giriyapura received 22.8mm, Birur received 13.8mm, Yemmedoddi received 18mm. Last year the region received total rainfall of 44.4mm in May and this year the quantity has gone down drastically.
