Remakes being the order of the day, especially of flicks that have done good business at the box office, film-makers take to the easy route to rake in the moolah. One such in the series of rehashes takes the form of Ishtam, a carbon of the Telugu film Emayindhi Ee Vela.
Reflecting the modern day musings, misgivings and meanderings on marriage and mutual compatability, Ishtam revolves around an enstranged young urban couple who have hastily split following petty misunderstandings. Saravanan and Sandhya seek to take a second shy at marriage with each on cosy chat with their prospective partners.
It’s flashback to their earlier times jab they met, courted, quarreled and call it quits.
Providing subtle interplay between the modern and the traditional, the progressive versus the conservative, Istham, both bold and bland, fails to live up to the expectations of the enterprising premise which it seeks to address.
With director Prem Nizar preferring to plod the predictable path and rise above the ordinary and the chemistry between the lead pair too much to be desired, Ishtam fails to live up to one’s liking. It’s rather pitiful given that it seeks to put in perspective today’s GenX’s idea of romance, marriage and premarital sex.
